Join us to commemorate the grand opening of San Pedro I— a historic occasion for UTSA that signifies the university’s role as a national leader in information security and data science and marks a new era for downtown San Antonio’s Tech Corridor.

The ceremony will commence with a musical performance by UTSA’s Pep Band followed by remarks from university leadership and renowned entrepreneurs and business leaders. The program will also feature a keynote from Chief Data & Technology Officer of data.org Dr. Uyi Stewart and will conclude with a formal ribbon cutting.

Uyi Stewart, Ph.D.

Chief Data & Technology Officer, data.org

Data.org is a nonprofit organization that seeks to democratize and reimagine the use of data to tackle society’s greatest challenges and improve lives across the globe. Previously, Dr. Stewart served as an executive director at AI Commons, a non-profit focused on democratizing access to AI in emerging markets. He was a director of global development’s strategy, data and analytics at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, centralizing the use of data to fight disease, poverty, and inequity. Furthermore, he was also a Distinguished Engineer, co-founder and Chief Scientist, at IBM Research – Africa, where he pioneered the use of big data to combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from McGill University. He has 15 patents, has authored 65 publications, and has been involved in the implementation of hundreds of innovative digital solutions across Africa, Asia, and the USA.

Join us for the debut of San Pedro I’s new Weston Conference Center with a luncheon and panel discussion to recognize UTSA’s latest milestone in creating a national epicenter for information security and data science in downtown San Antonio.

Guests are invited to enjoy lunch while engaging in a moderated panel discussion with industry leaders and innovators on the future of data science and the significance of investing in the downtown Tech Corridor to meet growing demands. The program will also recognize city, county and community support as well as recognize a MOU between UTSA and the United States Census.

Take an exclusive peak at San Pedro I with self-guided Discovery Tours that encourage guests to visit with faculty and students to learn about how data science and cybersecurity are integral to enriching our highly connected, digital lives—all while exploring the building’s state-of-the art facilities. Topics will include work that explores improving human health and public safety; making vehicles, homes and entire cities smarter and more secure; telling stories using digital media and much more.
